World's smallest wireless charger by LG

LG Electronics has announced the world's smallest wireless charger with electromagnetic induction technology at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. The new WCP-300 Wireless Charger is Qi certified and measures only 6.9cm in the diameter. This wireless charger will be compatible with all the smartphones that support the Qi Standard for wireless charging.

Palm has been offering TouchStone charger for its Pre smartphone two years ago and no one bothered doing anything similar. But now LG has finally announced a similar charger.

Launch of Nokia Lumia 720 & 520 with Windows phone 8

The ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, has seen Nokia make two big announcements for smartphones. It has launched two new Windows 8 Lumia devices, the Lumia 720 and the Lumia 520.

Nokia Lumia 720 is aimed at offering a high end camera experience, and comes with Nokia’s latest music and navigation experiences. “The Nokia Lumia 720 clearly demonstrates our portfolio strategy”, said Jo Harlow, Nokia’s executive vice president for Smart Devices. “By taking select innovations from our high end products and matching them to the priorities of a given audience, we’re driving these advanced technologies to new price points for an incredible midrange smartphone experience.”

Firefox OS phones by July'13

Mozilla, makers of the popular Firefox internet browser, is preparing to challenge Google and Apple's grip on smartphone software.

A new Firefox operating system for mobile devices is set for a July release after winning the backing of 13 wireless service providers around the globe, including Spain's Telefonica, China Unicom and America Movil.

Mozilla is betting there's room for a software developer-friendly mobile platform alongside Apple's and Google's Android, which together power the majority of mobile devices on the planet.

Cheaper Windows smartphone by Nokia

Nokia unveiled a cheaper model in its Lumia smartphone range, powered by Microsoft's Windows phone software, as it tries to regain dominance in emerging markets like China.

The Finnish cellphone maker, which until recently was the world's largest maker of phones, said Monday the new Lumia 520 will start at (euro) 139, or about $183, before phone-company subsidies.

That compares favorably with Apple's two-year-old iPhone 4, which costs $450 before subsidies. However, low-end smartphones running Google's Android software are available for less than $100.
