HTC Desire Eye now available for Rs 35,990

HTC's Desire Eye was launched last month alongside the One Eye, but the company had not disclosed the price of the device. Now, Mumbai based retailer Manish Khatri has revealed on Twitter that the phone costs Rs.35,990. He also claimed that the phone was available for purchase.

HTC for its part has neither disclosed the price of the device on it website nor in any other manner. When contacted, the company confirmed that the pricing was not announced. Its website still lists the phone as 'coming soon'.

The Desire Eye flaunts a double shot design similar to the Desire 820. It is a selfie focused phone with twin 13-megapixel cameras on the front and back. In fact, on both the front and the back, the phone has dual-LED flash modules, making both the cameras equally potent. The camera on the back has a f/2.0 aperture, while the one on the front has a f/2.2 aperture.

HTC has also added a number of software features like a split capture function, and crop me in function. These features have been seen on Samsung phones earlier.

It is also a IPX7 rated smartphone which can endure immersion under 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. This is not too dissimilar from the Re action camera.

Xolo Opus 3 with a 5-inch display

The word ‘selfie’ has sparked the proliferation of an entirely new breed of smartphones like the Xolo Opus 3 which sports a price of Rs 8499 in India. You call a device a selfie phone when it has a good quality front camera accompanied by flash. Without the last mentioned component, it’s just a handset with a decent webcam.
The Xolo Opus 3 has a 5MP front-facing snapper with an 88-degree wide angle lens, flash unit and BSI sensor. The rear casing shows of an impressive 8MP camera powered by Sony Exmor R. It uses dual flash, embeds a 5P Lens design and offers an aperture of f/2.0. All in all, you should get some pretty decent low light performance out of it.

Micromax Canvas Elanza A93 priced at Rs 9,400

Hot on the trail of the Micromax MAd A94, the company has launched yet another mid-ranger. This time around it’s the Micromax Canvas Elanza A93 and it’s been priced at Rs 9,400 at at least one online retailer.

Quite in the vein of recent launches, the Canvas Elanza also gets a 5-inch screen, but instead of full HD or even 720p resolution, it gets a qHD (540×960 pixels) display. The dual-SIM phone (GSM+GSM) is powered by a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor and gets a healthy 1 GB of RAM. Connectivity options include the standard suite of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, micro USB and GPS. There’s FM radio as well as 3G and 2G cellular connectivity.

Despite being released in the second month of 2014, the A93 only runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and not the latest KitKat OS, which is surprising and disappointing considering it has been out for nearly five months now. In fact, most of Micromax’s recent releases have come with Android 4.2 out of the box and not even Android 4.3.

HTC Desire 501 & Desire 601

Back in 2010, HTC was one of the top smartphone makers in the world, accounting for one in every ten smartphones sold.

After years of strong market performance, the Taiwanese phone maker is in a tight spot, facing stiff competition from Apple, Samsung and other handset makers. Last week, it reported worse-than-expected results for Q4FY13. Though the sale of its remaining 25% stake in Beats Electronics for $265 million helped the company avoid its second-consecutive quarterly loss, it appears that despite aggressive cost-cutting measures—buying chips from cheaper vendors, outsourcing production etc—the handset maker’s troubles are far from over. The company’s global share of the smartphone market has declined to 2.2% in the third quarter of 2013, from a peak of 10.3% only two years ago.
